Don't let CRA catch you unprepared.

    Missing Credits & Deductions

Every year, Edmonton taxpayers overpay because no one asked about RRSP room, home office, medical, or tuition credits.

    April 30 Deadline Panic

The T1 deadline is strict. Late filing means 5% penalties plus monthly interest on balances owing.

    Self-Employment Confusion

T2125 and T776 schedules for business and rental income are complex — errors here are the #1 CRA audit trigger.

Ahmed reviewed these patterns for 5 years as a tax auditor.

Now that knowledge works for you, not against you. Every return, every filing, every defence strategy benefits from an insider's understanding of what CRA looks for.

What Is a T1 Personal Tax Return?

A T1 personal income tax return is the annual filing Canadian residents submit to report income, claim deductions and non-refundable credits, and calculate tax owing or refund. Ahmed Jama CPA prepares T1 returns for employees, self-employed individuals, landlords, investors, students, and newcomers to Canada. The standard filing deadline is April 30, or June 15 if you or your spouse are self-employed.

    • Standard deadline: April 30 for most filers — the balance owing is also due this date.
    • Self-employed deadline: June 15 filing, but any balance owing is still due April 30.
    • Common credits: RRSP, TFSA room, home office, medical, disability (DTC), tuition (T2202), childcare, and moving expenses.
    • Self-employment forms: T2125 for business income, T776 for rental income — both require careful expense categorization.

Capital Gains and the 2024 Inclusion Rate Change

For capital gains realized after June 25, 2024, the inclusion rate increased to 2/3 for individuals on annual gains above $250,000. Gains below the $250,000 threshold remain at 1/2. This affects investment sales, rental property dispositions, and business asset sales. Ahmed calculates the correct inclusion rate and explores planning strategies to minimize the tax impact.

    • Threshold: The first $250,000 of annual capital gains stays at 50% inclusion for individuals.
    • Above threshold: Gains exceeding $250,000 are taxed at 2/3 inclusion rate.
    • Planning opportunities: Timing dispositions across tax years can keep gains below the threshold.
